Artist Statement

I explore the emotional aspects that I see and feel in the subjects that I paint. I want to convey the power and dynamism along with any fragility and sensitivity that co-exists in my subjects or scene.

The power and delicacy of industrial manufacturing equipment is explored in some of my work. Often through my choice of composition I will show a glimpse of a larger object which may give the viewer an abstract impression in my work. My colors are somber, those found in everyday factory life, with harsh indoor lighting.

My use of color and dramatic brush stroke is done in a manner that celebrates the medium of oil paint. I often use a painterly style, thick paint, vivid hues and composition to add abstraction and playfulness to my subjects. This can be seen in my figurative and portrait painting.

The opposing traits in my works have combined to propel me forward.

Bio

Ellen was born in Phila and moved to the UK in 1969 where she became a criminal law solicitor and practiced for 30 years. It was in her professional work that she developed her interest in the  realities of everyday life for the vulnerable people. These experiences have had a lasting impact on the choice of her subjects and the powerful style in which she paints. Ellen returned to the Washington DC area in 2003 when her husband was offered a position at The George Washington University.

In 2020, Ellen graduated from the Master Arts Program at the Compass Atelier. The program is taught by artist and director Glen Kessler.

Her workshop studies include those taught by Tina Garrett, Alyssa Monks, Steven Assael, Duane Keiser, Roberto Osti and Rob Liberace.
